Rochelle and Mike Schlins are convinced your stay at Smith Hotel will be one of the highlights of your trip. Both hosts have worked in the people business for over 40 years before buying the hotel. Rochelle worked in retail as a JC Penny’s buyer/manager before buying the hotel in 1998. Mike has been an educator/coach since 1973. All of that experience has taught them the lessons of giving value for the dollar spent and that people come first. On a weekly basis they both try to fine ways to please the hotel’s varied customers. Many 15 hour days, throughout the season, give them both a sense of satisfaction solving the housing need of their clients. “We are the ass-kiss bed and breakfast of Hwy-89,” Mike so kiddingly says at the end of a long week. So many guest say the same. The guest book is full of words of praise for the time spent attending to every request.
Rochelle grew up in southern California where she lived the great life of a surfer girl attending high school just minutes from the beach. She worked in a surf shop making bikinis and loving the Beach Boys. Traveling to Mexico for many years, with husband one, was training ground for running the Smith Hotel. The Penny’s corporation grabbed her up and for 27 years, she slaved at retail, but learned the value of each dollar spent. Buying the hotel was an escape from Las Vegas where she had learned all that Penny’s had to teach her.
Mike came to the Smith Hotel after a sunburned ear left him not being able to play golf with friends in the Mesquite area. He stayed in room 3 for one night staying up late talking with Rochelle. Both seemed to agree that a date was appropriate, so 6 weeks later a Las Vegas date “Sealed the deal.” Traveling back and forth from Alaska, where Mike spent 25 years teaching and fishing in Sitka, got to be too much and a partnership including a great marriage was planned. Both believe that was their best moment together. Mike lived so many places before Alaska. Poking into great fishing spots and spotting great traveling deals it seemed a natural for him to land in the tourist business. Each morning you will find him talking to guest about best routes to travel for the great day trips the area provides.
Both agree that you will enjoy your stay with them. The Hotel reflects their varied personalities and love of people.
