The southwest United States can be characterized by deserts and mountain ranges forming valleys and basins which, in the right light, are spectacular. Photographers can spend their sighted hours shooting pictures until they run out of space on their cameras. So many great areas surround Smith Hotel it would take weeks see them all. Here are a few of our favorites.
The two national parks Zion and Bryce are truly closest to the hotel. Nearly 100% of our guests visit these parks while staying with us. Bryce is a one hour, beautiful, drive north, this drive takes you along rivers and between two mountains. Red Rock Canyon sit at the entrance of Bryce framing itís marvelous entrance. A great days drive from Bryce National Park to Boulder UT on Hwy 12 is one of the best in the area. Very manageable in a single day the Anastasi State Park in Boulders is well worth seeing. Donít miss the Burr trail for a slot like canyon drive for cars starting from there.
Zion National Park lies 26 minutes to our south, majestic sandstone peaks signal its entrance. Many visitors agree this park, with the thousand plus foot faces, tight curved roads and varied wildlife is breath taking. A shuttle system takes you up valley along the river. Many varied hikes will inspire you to stay longer then you have planned.
Escalate Grand Staircase National Monument sits at our door step, the road leading into this 2 million acre area starts at our driveway. Even though the roads are mostly gravel they are well maintained. Few visitors will be with you as it is maintained simply to give a wilderness experience. One of the areas best slot canyons lie within it boarders.
North Rim Grand Canyon National Park is 90 miles to the south on Hwy 89A. It offers a view of the canyon from a north to south vantage. At 9000 feet it remains cooler than the Grand Canyon. The drive into the North rim is well worth the 45 minute excursion.
Hwy 14, the route to Cedar City UT, is one of the prettiest drives in our area. Picking up that drive takes you over a great set of mountains where you will view huge Ponderosa Pines, aspen groves, several lakes and vast lava fields. The views back to Zion are fun as you are also viewing from 10.000 feet which gives a great perspective.
Page Arizona is most definitely a destination worth visiting. Two hours south on Hwy 89 you break over a small ridge to see Lake Powell, formed by the Colorado River, itís one of the most spectacular bodies of water in the desert southwest. World class trout fishing exists at Leeís Ferry near Page on the Colorado. Donít miss Antelope Canyon as it is the most photographed slot canyon in the area
